Shoppe Diaries: Confessions of a Boutique Owner
Let's clear something up.
Owning a boutique is not all coffee runs, trying on cute clothes, and taking Instagram photos in perfect lighting. (Although... there is a fair amount of trying on cute clothes.)
Most mornings start with unlocking the front door and immediately asking myself, "Okay... what are we fixing today?"
Some days it's a wobbly clothing rack.
Some days it's a light bulb.
Some days it's the credit card reader deciding it's on vacation.
And then there's our Roomba.
He's... complicated.
He has two settings: "Works flawlessly" and "Absolutely not."
Some mornings he glides across the floor like he's auditioning for Employee of the Month. Other mornings he stares at me with one blinking light as if he's saying, "Figure it out yourself."
So yes, sometimes you'll find me vacuuming the boutique before we open because apparently I am both owner and honorary janitor.
Glamorous? Debatable.
Worth it? Every single time.
Once everything is clean (or clean enough that no one will notice), it's time for my favorite part of the day...
Hopping on Instagram Stories to chat with y'all.
Seriously—it never feels like I'm talking to customers. It feels like I'm catching up with friends. Whether I'm showing you the newest arrivals, asking which color you like better, giving you a behind-the-scenes peek, or documenting the latest Roomba rebellion, those little conversations have become one of my favorite parts of owning this boutique.
Some of you have been here since the very beginning. Some of you found us last week. Either way, when I see your names pop up in my messages or your replies to our Stories, it genuinely makes my day.
This little corner of the internet has become so much more than a place to sell clothes—it's become a community. And that's something I'll never take for granted.
Next fave thing...
Unpacking new arrivals.
The feeling of opening shipment boxes NEVER gets old. It still feels like Christmas morning, except instead of toys, it's dresses, denim, sweaters, and accessories that I cannot wait for you to see.
I'll hold up a new piece and immediately start thinking...
"Oh my gosh, Lindsay would LOVE this."
"This is so Elizabeth."
"I already know Lori is buying this."
That's probably one of my favorite parts of owning a boutique. The clothes stop being clothes. They become vacation outfits. First-date outfits. Family photo outfits. Job interview outfits. Birthday dinner outfits. The outfit you wore when someone complimented you in the grocery store.
Little pieces of your stories.
That's pretty special.
And while you might only see the finished boutique—the folded tables, the fresh displays, the perfectly steamed dresses—there's a whole lot happening before the doors ever open.
We're brainstorming.
Putting out proverbial fires.
Rearranging the same display for the third time because something just feels off.
Changing camera batteries.
Steaming wrinkles that somehow appeared out of nowhere.
Refolding the same pair of jeans seventeen times.
And laughing... a lot.
Because around here, we don't take ourselves too seriously. Sure, we care about creating a beautiful shopping experience. But we also believe it's okay if things aren't always picture-perfect. Sometimes the best stories come from the imperfect moments.
Like a rebellious Roomba.
Or a shipment that arrives five minutes before closing.
Or realizing you've been wearing the price tag on your own shirt for half the day.
(It's happened. Allegedly.)
At the end of it all, we're just really grateful.
Grateful that you choose to spend your time here. Grateful that you cheer us on. Grateful that you've turned this little dream into something so much bigger than we ever imagined. Every time you walk through our doors or place an order online, you're helping write the next chapter of this story.
And trust us...
We've got plenty more stories to tell.
Until next time,
Missy + your boutique besties 💕
